Change the subject

A standard method from Number and algebra basics: the steps and worked examples.

Steps

  1. Treat the new subject as the unknown.
  2. Undo operations in reverse order: brackets and fractions first, then add/subtract, then multiply/divide.
  3. Write the new subject on the left.

Want to check an answer? Fraction calculator shows every step.

Worked examples

Example 1: Change the subject: make a the subject of v = u + at.
