Key points, key words and examples for every chapter: P1 maths topics
Where children most often get stuck
- Moving from counting to adding and subtracting: some children still count one by one on their fingers.
- Word problems that compare amounts: children must read the question first to know whether to add or subtract.
- Telling the time: the long and short hands are easy to mix up.
How can parents help at home?
- Let your child count coins and work out the change when you shop.
- Group everyday things such as chopsticks or blocks so your child can see "groups of 10".
- Look at a clock once a day and ask what time it is now and what time it will be in half an hour.
How much does P1 maths tutoring cost?
Typical private tutoring rates are about $140–160 (university students) to 400+ (serving teachers) an hour (that platform's published 2026 fee guide). Group classes at tutoring centres usually cost less per student. Before signing up, see the five questions in the maths tutoring guide.

Frequently asked questions
Does a P1 student need a tutor?
Not every student does. If your child can finish homework and understands their own mistakes, short daily practice is enough. If they lose marks on the same kind of question in several tests in a row, it is worth getting help, or first using free online practice to find the weak spots.
Does Sprout have a P1 course?
Yes. Learn mode is open for P1 now, free with no sign-up. Lessons are in Chinese for now.
