Five questions to ask before you sign up

  1. Is the tutoring centre registered? Under the Education Ordinance (Cap. 279), section 3, a place that gives educational courses to 20 or more people in any one day, or to 8 or more people at any one time, counts as a "school" in law and must be registered. You can ask the centre to show its registration.
  2. Is there a trial lesson? Afterwards, ask your child whether they understood the way the tutor explained things.
  3. How will you know there is progress? Ask how the tutor records mistakes and progress, and how often they report to parents.
  4. Is the aim understanding, or finishing homework? If the tutor only helps finish homework, your child may still not manage alone in a test.
  5. Are the fees and terms written down? Agree the hourly rate, number of lessons, cancellation terms, travel and material costs before you start.
