Tutoring centre, private tutor or online learning: how to choose
| Tutoring centre | Private tutor | Online learning (such as Sprout) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Format | Small group or large class, fixed time and place | One-to-one at home or at the tutor's place, flexible times | At home any time, a few minutes per lesson |
| Cost | Group lessons usually cost less per student than one-to-one | Charged by the hour, see the table above | Sprout is free for now |
| Suits | Students who need a fixed study time and want to drill exam questions with classmates | Students with particular weak spots, or who need someone beside them for homework | Students who need short daily practice to make the basic steps automatic |
| Watch out for | Not every student gets attention; count the travel time | Tutor quality varies a lot, and it costs more | Needs self-discipline; cannot replace a real person |
Five questions to ask before you sign up
- Is the tutoring centre registered? Under the Education Ordinance (Cap. 279), section 3, a place that gives educational courses to 20 or more people in any one day, or to 8 or more people at any one time, counts as a "school" in law and must be registered. You can ask the centre to show its registration.
- Is there a trial lesson? Afterwards, ask your child whether they understood the way the tutor explained things.
- How will you know there is progress? Ask how the tutor records mistakes and progress, and how often they report to parents.
- Is the aim understanding, or finishing homework? If the tutor only helps finish homework, your child may still not manage alone in a test.
- Are the fees and terms written down? Agree the hourly rate, number of lessons, cancellation terms, travel and material costs before you start.
